What can I write about?
Anything you want – but make it interesting. Thousands of people might read it, after all.
Who decides what’s interesting?
Your fellow 99wds users do. They can vote your story up or down according to how much they like it. You can find everyone’s favourite stories under the Best of 99wds tab.
Why the word limit?
That’s the challenging part. Think of it as a puzzle.
Plus, it makes you write better. There’s nothing like a word limit to make you think about each word you’re writing. It helps you focus.
You’ll get the hang of it. Trust us – it’s fun.
Are there extra points for writing 99 words exactly?
Yes. The editors will give your story a boost in the rankings.
Why only true stories?
Because everybody’s got a true story worth sharing, and real life is more interesting than fiction.
Where’s my story?
Here’s the thing. We want 99wds.com to be a good read – so we check every story before it goes onto the site.
We’ll get it online as fast as we can, unless it falls foul of the rules.
Yup. We’re not going to approve anything that’s:
- Longer than 99 words
- Incomprehensible, appallingly written or delivered in txt spk.
- A regurgitated urban myth. No friends of friends/fast food/bodily fluids tales, thanks
- An obvious in-joke that only you and your pals will get
- Advertising, for generic Viagra or otherwise
- Blatantly defamatory
- Just plain bad. We know it’s a subjective matter, but our decision is final on this one.
Sorry if that sounds strict, but we’re trying to create something great here, folks, and we don’t apologise for editing hard.
